Psychotherapy in New York City

For anxious New Yorkers, our virtues are often the same as our vices.

You're able to ace your presentations- but procrastinate on starting them if they might not be perfect.

While you’re a great friend or partner, the fear of disappointing those people has made you allergic to conflict. These qualities can be strengths, yet still lead to people pleasing or perfectionism. Well-meaning loved ones may tell you to “calm down,” but this can feel about as realistic as changing the weather. It’s exhausting and can lead to anxiety that is high and self confidence that is low.

Julia Lawrence & Couples Therapy in New York

I took a leap of faith in 2015 and decided to get my Masters of Social Work from The University of Pennsylvania.

In graduate school I provided assessment, diagnosis, psychotherapy, and crisis intervention for a diverse population at an acute psychiatric hospital. In addition, I provided both individual and group therapy at Temple University’s college counseling center. Most recently, from 2018-2022 I worked at a A Good Place Therapy, a group private practice, before starting Julia Lawrence Psychotherapy.

Outside of work, you can usually find me cuddling my dog (ok, really anyone's dog), reading, or on a beach when possible.

Julia Lawrence, LCSW

I began my career working as the Director of Operations for a New York City Councilman. This was an amazing experience, but I found myself wondering how to make change in a more direct way.

  • • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy 35-Hour Certification Program, University of Pennsylvania, 2017

    • Dialectical Behavior Therapy 35 Hour Training Course, University of Pennsylvania, 2017

    • Treating Anxiety with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Deborah Melamed, PhD, Soho Cognitive, 2018

    • Gottman Method for Couples Therapy, Level I, 2020

    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety and Personality Variables, The Beck Institute, 2019

    • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for OCD, Mass General Hospital, 2020

My clients have described me as warm, empathetic, relatable, and occasionally sarcastic. People appreciate that I am an active participant in therapy.

Though I utilize many modalities, my background is in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and other evidence based solution-focused therapies.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a goal-oriented approach that helps teach you how to become aware of your thoughts, emotions and behaviors. We will explore your beliefs about these problems and how negative or inaccurate thinking may be contributing to your emotional experience.

While I take the work we do seriously, I believe in incorporating levity or humor even in tough circumstances. I love when pets join us for telehealth sessions, and encourage you to send me the meme that reminds you of (or even makes fun of) our work together.

  • Therapy generally begins with a free fifteen-minute phone consultation. During this time, you’ll have a chance to tell me what you’re hoping to get help with, as well as any other goals or information you think would be important for me to know. If it sounds like a good fit, I’ll give you my thoughts on how I might be able to help and answer any questions. We will also discuss fees and scheduling. If you prefer to skip the consult, we can schedule over email and discuss these things during our first session.

  • Typically individual sessions are 45 minutes, and couples sessions typically are an hour.

  • Telling a total stranger things you may not have vocalized to anyone before is a tall order. For individuals, therapy begins with a thorough intake where I will learn more about your background, your relationships, as well as what brings you in at this time. For couples, I generally meet with the couple together as well as each partner individually. After these sessions, we will create a treatment plan and check in periodically about how the process is working for you.

  • At this time, I do not take insurance directly, and am an out of network provider. This means that the full fee is due at the time of the session, and each month I will provide you with a “superbill” that you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement. If you’re confused about out of network benefits, I will be happy to try to answer any questions.

  • I do! If you do not have out of network benefits or the fee is too costly, I have a limited number of sliding scale spots. The rate for these is determined by both your income and other situational factors.

  • Let’s schedule your 15 minute phone consultation to get started!
